HISTORY
As the fifth son born to House Cresyn, Matthew spent the majority of his life firmly and comfortably in the background. He was only two when House Cresyn was blessed (finally) with a female heir, and while his elder brothers were embittered and angry at the situation -- they, after all, had had plenty of time to cultivate hope and ambition -- Matthew grew up apathetic to the entire debate. He certainly would never have been all that significant, with four elder brothers to absorb all the rare privilege sons in a daughterless household might have had. Besides, Aes was so likeable -- always smiling, always charming, a ray of sunshine in the ever-present fog of resentment that House Cresyn became in those formative years.

Rather than looking down on her, Matthew instead endeared himself to his younger sister; their small age difference and similar determination to apply a silver lining to all aspects of their lives made this easy. And if Aes was a little oblivious, a little obsessed with frivolities, a little flighty and a bit ridiculous -- well, she'd have advisors, wouldn't she? Why not just allow it to be endearing, and deal with the rest as it came? No point in railing against tradition. (After all, some could say all these same things about the Princess, and you didn't see the Prince wailing about how unfair it all was, did you?)

In time, Matthew's quiet, even cheerful acceptance of the inevitable did win him some noteriety -- it became well known in Dalphora that he was the best behaved of Lady Rachael's sons, for one. For another, his role as the future Lady of Dalphora's favorite brother contained within it some unexpected perks; when Aes departed to sit the Council in Razen, it was Matthew that received Aes's letters, Matthew that had glowing stories about him circulated in the capital, and of course, Matthew that received invites to all manner of social functions in Razen. And while this was all very bewildering to him, his polite, demure, somewhat forgettable nature only worked in his favor among Razen's noble elite. (And if he was a little lost without Aes to attach himself to in Dalphora, well, jumping on every invitation offered was only to be expected.)

Not knowing any better, Matthew could only assume it was all of these things that caught the eye of the Queen herself on what was supposed to be just another uneventful visit with Aes.

And while courting the Queen can be baffling, distressing and overwhelming in turns, well -- he's never complained before.

It'd be a little silly to start now.

PERSONALITY
Matthew is humble, meek, unambitious, follows orders, and when he speaks, it's usually when spoken to. He dedicates himself utterly to the nearest woman in his life -- his Mother, his sister, and now, the Queen herself -- taking what responsibilities they offer him and supporting them without reservation. When he doesn't have a woman to please he's a bit lost. His conversation is pleasant, if mindless, and if courtesy is his armor, some would say he's an empty suit.

In truth, he's a remarkably nice, genuine boy who suffers from a very poor sense of identity and self worth. He takes compliments badly -- usually bewildered by them -- and when asked his opinion he's prone to stuttering and deferring without giving it at all in the end. He has very little confidence in himself and measures himself by how pleased the women in his life seem to be by him. He says what he thinks people want to hear and little else; but there's no malice in it, no clever scheming, no disdain or resentment -- he just doesn't know how to be anything else.

He's closest and most open with Aes. Most of their childhood rapport carried over to adulthood, and Aes, at least, has never been disappointed in him, no matter what he's shared with her.

Most Atsirians see Matthew as a pleasant, model man with a talent for smalltalk and a manner that manages easygoing casuality without straying too far into irreverence.

APPEARANCE
Matthew's appearance is startling similiar to Aes's; so much so that when younger, they often enjoyed pretending they were twins, in truth. Blonde hair, green eyes, soft features and a slight build make him pleasant to look at, if mostly forgettable, unless one is making an effort.
